Madikwe Safari

4 Days

Overview

South Africa has a number of malaria-free safari destinations which are great for a family safari with young children. Madikwe is one of these, a sprawling Big 5 reserve in the North West province on the border of Botswana that is best known as the place where you are most likely to see the endangered African wild dog.

The reserve is easily accessible from Johannesburg with direct light aircraft flights to the Madikwe airstrips. Two hours after departing Joburg you can be sitting with a cocktail gazing over the unique landscape that is punctuated by enormous volcanic intrusions known as inselbergs. From here, your Big 5 safari experience begins.

On arrival at Johannesburg airport, you'll be met by a representative of Fedair who will transfer you to their exclusive departure lounge in time for your light aircraft flight to Madikwe Game Reserve. Two hours later on arrival at Madikwe, you'll be met by your game ranger and transferred by safari vehicle to your safari lodge.

What to expect on your Madikwe safari:

Madikwe is the fifth largest reserve in South Africa and the North West’s best kept secret. Home to the increasingly rare wild dog, black rhino, cheetah and a multitude of other brilliant wildlife, the reserve has a wide range of accommodation types ranging from farm houses to luxury game lodges. We will help you find the perfect option for your budget and preferences.

Being one of the lesser known reserves, Madikwe has fewer crowds than Kruger. This plus the fact that no day visitors are allowed means only the lodge safari vehicles have access to the park, giving your safari an exclusive feel. The reserve is like nowhere else in Africa with rich red soil and open savannah punctuated by rugged “koppies” (hills).

Lodges offer morning and evenings game drives with your ranger driving as your tracker sits up front looking out for wildlife and spoor. Fewer vehicles means you can approach wildlife sightings at a relaxed pace and spend plenty of time observing them. Many lodges offer specilaised kids' programmes which will keep the younger ones entertained while you enjoy a little R&R. You'll spend 3 days mixing up game drives, swimming and relaxing on your private terrace with a glass of something cold - a true classic safari experience.

After a final game drive and bush breakfast you will be returned to your lodge's airstrip for your return flight to Johannesburg where you will catch your international flight home.
