Namibia is immense, approximately 824,000 square kilometres, filled with rugged, beautiful landscapes of every kind creating an environment from which an amazing wealth of wildlife has adapted and thrived.
In 1884, South West Africa, the future Namibia, was declared a German Protectorate. By 1907 Swakopmund had the largest European population of any German colony in Africa.
Today this curious desert town, nestled between the dunes and the ocean is ideal to spend a few days browsing through the galleries, bookshops, craft markets, jewellers and admiring the beautiful architecture. View the dunes from balloon, aircraft or parachute; get close up to the marine life – on foot, by boat or kayak.
One of the largest savannah conservation areas in Africa, Etosha National Park is world-renowned for its spectacular wildlife: elephant, black and white rhinoceros, lion, leopard, cheetah, large herds of springbok, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and a multitude of other fascinating species, big and small, interacting in their natural environment. The massive mineral pan, covering an area of approximately 4 500 square kilometres or about 20% of the surface of the park, gave rise to the name Etosha, which means Great White Place.
The Namibian Dollar (N$) and South African Rand are the only legal tender in Namibia and can be used to purchase goods and services. The exchanger rate 1N$ = 1SA Rand.
Cell phone reception is very limited outside of main towns.
