About Mount Camdeboo Private Game Reserve

Lying just east of Graaff-Reinet, in the heart of the malaria-free Eastern Cape's Great Karoo, Mount Camdeboo Private Game Reserve is a luxurious, privately owned sanctuary perfectly contrasted against the stark plains and rugged mountains of the Karoo. Purchased as a country retreat for the family in 1996 by the late Logie Buchanan, his family is now making sure his vision is kept alive. All accommodation is housed in historic and beautifully restored Cape Dutch houses in the Sneeuberg Valley (along the seasonal Melkbos River) with the majestic Sneeuberg Mountain range providing the perfect backdrop. Cambedoo Manor showcases incredible Dutch architecture and offers four beautifully appointed double bedroom suites, each with its own private patio, while Courtyard Manor is a double gabled homestead (also with four suites) with a wrap-around veranda. Hillside Manor is ideal for families or larger groups and boasts sweeping valley views, and secluded Peppertree Cottage is the perfect romantic spot for those seeking privacy. Lastly, for a more authentic safari experience there are two luxury safari tents raised on wooden decks. Relaxed elegance and the true essence of Karoo settler heritage can be felt in all accommodation options. Each of the manors also have a full- length swimming pool, communal satellite television and entertainment centres. The reserve is home to various endangered species that have been successfully rehabilitated, with the passion for conservation being palpable throughout the camp. Admire the abundant wildlife during game drives (twice daily) or guided bush walks, and for try something extra exciting: cheetah tracking. You’ll see everything from giraffe and buffalo, to springbuck, white rhino, Cape mountain zebra and more. The region is steeped in history and culture and experiencing a personalised safari here is something of a treat. In between, explore the shops, museums and architecture of nearby Graaff-Reinet, or take a day trip to Nieu Bethesda. Since Mount Camdeboo is geared towards families, the kids will experience a range of kiddie-friendly activities that will keep them busy while the adults relax. The cuisine created by the talented chefs sees early Cape settler recipes meeting light, contemporary flavours. Fresh produce from neighbouring farms and suppliers are brought in daily, with herbs grown on the reserve adding the final touch to each meal. Dinners are served in the boma under the stars, in a secluded courtyard or in front of the fire in the dining room. Be collected by Mount Camdeboo’s recommended transfer company from Graaff-Reinet's Airstrip (closest airstrip) or Port Elizabeth Airport (closest national airport), or self-drive to the reserve. Children welcome.

Dining & Cuisine

Food and Dining and Mount Camdeboo

The Karoo has a rich heritage when it comes to flavour-rich, traditional cooking. Mouthwatering freshly baked breads helped cement flourishing loves, while secret ingredients were used to treat ailments of the body or soul.

The talented chefs at Mount Camdeboo have been inspired by recipes that date back to the early Cape settlers. Recipes that they have reinvented with a light contemporary cuisine touch. These wholesome meals are seasoned with herbs grown on the Reserve - their roots deep in ancient soils - while the balance of delicious ingredients are brought in fresh from neighbouring farms and suppliers. Like the summer sunshine, there is never a shortage of food.

DINING
Just like our menu, our evening dining venues are varied. One night you may be supping under the twinkling Karoo stars (an essential part of the African experience) - complete with full course silverware and a dedicated chef cooking right before your eyes. While another may find you dining in a secluded courtyard or even in the company of a roaring dining room fire. It’s a little touch of surprise and a highly enjoyable way in which to absorb the splendour and diversity that Mount Camdeboo has to offer you.
